Ten Years of The Oxygen Project
Founded in 2016, The Oxygen Project began with a simple but powerful belief: when young people are given space to breathe; physically, emotionally, and mentally; they are better equipped to learn, lead, and thrive. What started as a grassroots effort to introduce yoga, mindfulness, and wellness practices to youth has grown into a trusted community-based organization serving schools, families, and communities across St. Louis. As we mark ten years of impact, we reflect on how our work has evolved, and what has remained at the very core of who we are.
Over the past decade, The Oxygen Project has expanded in both reach and depth. Our programming has grown beyond yoga mats to include trauma-informed, healing-centered approaches that address stress, anxiety, violence exposure, and emotional regulation. We’ve strengthened partnerships with schools, educators, and community organizations to ensure our services are responsive to real needs on the ground. We’ve also deepened our commitment to equity, recognizing that wellness is not a luxury, but a necessity; especially for young people navigating systemic barriers, chronic stress, and under-resourced environments.
Yes, even as our programs and partnerships have evolved, so much has stayed the same. We are still grounded in relationship-building. We still lead with compassion, cultural humility, and respect for the lived experiences of the young people and communities we serve. We still believe in meeting youth where they are, honoring their voices, and creating affirming spaces that support not just academic success, but whole-person well-being. Our instructors, staff, and partners continue to show up with care, consistency, and a deep commitment to youth healing and empowerment.
As we look ahead, The Oxygen Project remains focused on sustainability, impact, and innovation; while staying rooted in our founding values. The next chapter will include expanding access, strengthening evaluation and storytelling, and continuing to advocate for wellness as a critical component of youth development and educational success. Ten years in, our mission is as clear as it was in 2016: to help young people breathe easier, feel supported, and build resilience they need to thrive. We are grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey, and excited for what’s still to come.
